Training

The Philippine General Hospital is one of the four institutions in the Philippines that offer a 3-year residency program in Rehabilitation Medicine. The program is unique because it focuses on producing competent, compassionate and community-oriented physiatrists who are excellent teachers, efficient administrators and skilled researchers. The program consists of rotations in the general outpatient clinics, specialty clinics and in-patient services. Residents are also given the opportunity to perform electrodiagnostic tests, neurophysiologic intraoperative monitoring, cystometrograms, videofluoroscopic evaluation of swallowing, gait lab assessment, and diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound.
The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine (DRM) is the premiere institution in the training of allied health personnel which includes the Physical Therapists (PT), Occupational Therapists (OT), Speech & Language Therapists (SP), Clinical Psychologists, Special Education (SPED) teachers, and orthotist-prosthetist technicians. Its linkages with teaching institutions like the University of the Philippines – College of Allied Medical Professions (UP-CAMP), has provided training for undergraduate PT, OT, SP, Psychology Interns. It also provides post-graduate courses and seminars on PT, OT, and SPED.
The DRM also has various linkages with different departments and institutions, which provides an avenue for further learning, especially in the fields of Pediatrics, Geriatric and Sports Rehabilitation. This ensures that the residents have a variety of patients to manage using the holistic and team approach. Aside from training in a hospital-based setting, DRM staff takes part in the Community-based Rehabilitation Program. Together with the paramedical staff, residents become involved in the training of health workers and family members of the differently-abled, which in turn aids in bringing much needed disability prevention and rehabilitation services to the rural areas.
The DRM is actively fostering among its staff the interest and development of skills in producing quality researches in the field of Rehabilitation Medicine. It has its own Research Unit wherein staff members can have access to online resources for their researches.
