Research

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine strives to foster a “culture of research.” The faculty research team is dedicated in the promotion and development of research in the department. The department has its own Research Unit to complement the research didactics session and fora. Residents are required to complete their own researches by the end of their residency program. Monthly lectures are held which aims to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes in conducting a research. Being advocates of the inter- and multi-disciplinary approach, the department promotes research not only among the medical staff but also among the paramedical staff.
The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is an active participant in the annual Research Week of the Philippine General Hospital and the Research Implementation and Development Office (RIDO). Additionally, the faculty of the department is actively involved in research training and study groups. The department’s focus on improving its research program has paved the way to the growth and progress of researches and studies which won awards in national competitions and gained recognition in international conferences. The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine (DRM) continues to develop and nurture a research culture among the faculty, residents and allied health staff.  For 2008, the Department had 18 publications (2 book/book chapter, 2 papers, 13 abstracts, 1 in press), nine completed studies and eight on-going researches.  There were two studies conducted at the DRM by students from the College of Allied Medical Professions.
Lecture series on basic research methodology and evidence based medicine topics for the residents and consultants were conducted by Dr. Jenelyn Alviar and Dr. Cynthia Ang-Muñoz from January to July.  The residents presented updates on their case reports, protocols and research works almost every third Friday of the month.  To supplement research training, the medical and paramedical staff participated in the Philippine Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine (PARM) workshop on “Presenting and Publishing Scientific Papers” on February 1, 2008 at the Kimberly Hotel, Manila.  Dr. Alviar also conducted a hands-on workshop on literature search in April.
The Department held its annual Residents’ Research Forum on November 21, 2008.  All first year residents participated in the “Interesting Case Presentation.”  Dr. Kristopher de Leon garnered first place for his presentation on “Prosthesis for Patient with Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency: A Case Report” while Dr. Anna Tiangco was awarded second prize for her study on “Hereditary Spastic Paraparesis in 24-, 19- and 5-year Old Brothers: A Case Series.”
Several consultants and residents participated in international research fora. Dr. Alviar presented her paper entitled “Interpersonal Manner and Technical Quality – Factors in Patient Satisfaction? Developing a Patient Satisfaction Tool” and Dr. Rey Rey-Matias presented “A Comparative Pilot Study on the Effectiveness, Safety, Tolerability, and Pain Alleviation between Virgin Coconut Oil and Mineral Oil as Coupling in Therapeutic Ultrasound among Musculotendinous Injuries in an Outpatient Center from December 2006 to February 2007: A Randomized Controlled Double Blind- Controlled Study” during the 1st Asian Oceania Conference of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine in Nanjing, China in May 16-19, 2008.  Dr. Teresita Joy Evangelista also presented her papers on “Neurophysiologic Study of Laundrywomen With and Without Perceived Pasma” and “Survey of Management of Osteoporosis of Filipino Rehabilitation Medicine Doctors” as posters.  In the same convention, Dr. Jerico dela Cruz and Dr. Alviar presented a poster on “Spinal Cord Compression Secondary to Spinal Cord Deformity: A Case Report” while Dr. Mayla Tee presented a poster on “Transtibial Amputation in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Vasculitis: A Case Report.”  Dr. Dela Cruz and Dr. Tee also participated in the poster presentation during the 2008 World Federation of Neuro-rehabilitation, East Asia Regional Meeting, and 1st Congress of the Philippine Society of Neuro-rehabilitation in Cebu last March 26-29, 2008.
Dr. Jose Alvin Mojica prepared an i-poster presentation on “The Gait, Arms, Legs and Spine (GALS) Locomotor Screen Teaching Learning Package: Has it Achieved its Intended Learning Outcome?” at the Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology (APLAR) in Japan last September, 2008.
Dr. Michael Obispo presented his paper entitled “A Preliminary Study on the Factors affecting Compliance to Home Program on Neurodevelopmental Techniques (NDTs) among Motor Delay Patients” during the PARM 18th Annual Convention in Lipa City, Batangas last February 21-24, 2008. In the same forum, Dr. Tee presented her poster on transtibial amputation while Dr. Judah Leo Capistrano presented a poster on “A Case Report on Stroke Rehabilitation during Pregnancy.”
